| Year | 2014 |
| Media | Outdoor |
Background
Concept
Object/Result
Background
Small posters are the primary advertising medium for local small business owners, but they’re mostly illegal and pollute the environment.
– Around 47 percent of Korea’s outdoor advertising was found to be illegal (Ministry of Security and Public Administration, 2012).
– It’s estimated that between 30,000and50,000 are distributed daily (Seongnam-si).
Given that posters and flyers are very efficient for small businesses, local businesses carry on with the illegal practice despite the risks.
Concept
Seongnam-si’sTancheon Stream is the endpoint of an underground passage that many pedestrians use as a walking trail. But despite being frequented by an average 100,000 people per month, the underground passage has not been maintained, generating citizen complaints.
In response to this public outcry, we have come up with a project called “Gallery RO” (RO means “road” in Korean), with plans to turn the passageway into a gallery that could be used by local businesses to advertise.
Object/Result
Gallery RO, the revamped underground passage and new means of advertisement for local small businesses, was reported on in local media and blogs and tweeted about by the Seongnam City Hall and government offices, as well as by politicians.
